Day 7: From Nafplio to Monemvasia – A Journey Through Time

After breakfast, it’s time to pack up and set off for Monemvasia, a breathtaking medieval town on the southeastern coast of the Peloponnese. The scenic drive takes you through charming villages and rugged landscapes that highlight the region’s natural beauty. To reach the fortress town of Monemvasia, you first pass through the modern village of Gefyra — a simple yet practical stop with all basic amenities. Don’t miss the chance to taste local sweets like almond cookies and samousades (similar to baklava) before crossing the footbridge to the rock-bound citadel.
Cars are not allowed in Monemvasia, so park in Gefyra and continue on foot. The town has no streets, only cobblestone paths that weave between Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman-era buildings, painted in earthy hues of ochre and terracotta. Many now serve as boutique guesthouses, artisan shops, and cafés, though only a handful of people live here year-round. Stroll through the main path lined with cozy tavernas and local delicatessens like Kelari and Edodimopoleio, leading toward the eastern gate. From here, a short trail continues to the lighthouse, offering panoramic views over the Myrtoan Sea. Be sure to visit Portelo, the seaside gate once connected to the upper town (Ano Poli). Though the original road is gone, the gate still provides access to a rocky swimming spot — the only one inside Monemvasia’s walls. For those seeking history and solitude, walk up the Voltes path to explore Ano Poli, once more populated than the lower town but abandoned after the second Venetian occupation (1685–1715). Today, the area is under protection by the Greek Archaeological Service. The crown jewel of Ano Poli is the Hagia Sophia Church, built around 1150. While its name recalls Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia, this one was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It remains one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture in southern Greece. After a full day of exploring this living museum, it’s time to relax at your charming boutique hotel Likinia **** Lunch and dinner at your leisure.

Tip: Wear comfortable shoes — Monemvasia’s magic is best uncovered on foot. A perfect blend of history, architecture, and authentic Greek charm.
